Types of Solar Water Heaters According to Design

Collector

They are also known as integrated collector storage systems. Water is heated in small dark tanks and stays stored there until it’s withdrawn. If the consumption is low, the water can remain stored for very long periods making it very hot. These collectors do not work with closed-circuit loop systems and are not suitable for cold climates.

Evacuated tube

These have tubes that work in the same principle as a thermos. They have two glasses with a vacuum in between to minimize heat loss from the liquid. The inner glass tube holds the liquid being heated. Each particular tube can be replaced if not working. These solar systems are suitable for low temperatures but are very expensive.

Flat plate

It is made of copper tubes attached to plates for absorption. Heated water from the copper tubes is stored in absorption plates taken to that storage tank. Such solar water heater are common in many parts of the world.

Circulation system

These are the types of ways water moves to the storage tank and around the system in general. These include closed loops, active circulation systems, and natural systems.

Direct systems

These heaters move water through solar collectors, heated in the process. The heated water is then stored in a water tank then moves to a separate water tank where it is stored for later use or immediately used.

Closed loops

As said above, these are usually very adaptable in cold climates, although incompatible with batch collectors. They use a non-freezing liquid that transfers heat to the storage tank, heat exchangers in the storage tank transfer heat to water. Fluids in the solar collectors are heated by the sun.

Active or forced circulation

These have pumps to push water to the storage tanks. They are relatively common.

Passive

These let nature run its course. They work by convection principles. As water moves up to the storage tanks, it’s heated.
