Highlights should always be applied in thin sections in order to avoid any unevenness. If you have very thick hair, ask your stylist to use a lighter color so that it doesn’t overwhelm your locks. You’ll also want to make sure that the highlights are blended in well with your natural hair or sew in weave hair. Highlights will require touch-ups every six to eight weeks in order for them to look their best.

When you are highlighting your hair at home, it is important that you use a very light hand and stick with those colors that are one shade lighter or darker than your natural color. This will help prevent any harsh lines from developing around the crown of your head. Follow up with a high-quality shampoo and conditioner that will keep your hair looking soft, shiny and healthy.

Since highlights are by nature very light, it is important to use a moisturizing shampoo to avoid damage caused by dryness. A clarifying shampoo should only be used once or twice weekly in order to prevent stripping the color completely out of your strands.

If you don’t have time to highlight your hair at home, or prefer to go to a salon, make sure that you communicate your wishes clearly to your hair stylist. Tell them how much lightener they should use and where the highlights should be placed on your head. If you’d like, bring in pictures of exactly what you are trying to achieve.

If your hair is very dark, you will likely need to bleach your locks in order for the highlights to show up. If you’ve lightened your hair at home or didn’t take proper care of it after bleaching, your stylist might need to tone down the color so that it doesn’t look brassy or yellow.
